What size room do you need for a bed?
The bed is the easy part. The walkways, nightstands and doors are where rooms get tight.

Short answer: a queen fits in a 10′ × 10′ room and a king or California king in about 12′ × 12′.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Plan on at least 24 in of walking space on each side and at the foot; 30 to 36 in feels open.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Minimum room size by bed size
| Bed | Mattress | One maker's minimum room | Our math: 24 in walkways | Our math: 36 in walkways |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in | 7′ × 10′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 7′ 7″ × 8′ 8″ | 9′ 7″ × 9′ 8″ |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in | 7′ × 10′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 7′ 7″ × 9′ 1″ | 9′ 7″ × 10′ 1″ |
| Full | 54 × 75 in | 9′ × 10′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 8′ 11″ × 8′ 8″ | 10′ 11″ × 9′ 8″ |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | 10′ × 10′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 9′ 5″ × 9′ 1″ | 11′ 5″ × 10′ 1″ |
| King | 76 × 80 in | 12′ × 12′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 10′ 9″ × 9′ 1″ | 12′ 9″ × 10′ 1″ |
| California king | 72 × 84 in | 12′ × 12′[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | 10′ 5″ × 9′ 5″ | 12′ 5″ × 10′ 5″ |
The last two columns are our arithmetic: mattress plus 5 in for a frame,[1 · Oct 29, 2026] plus 24 in (or 36 in) on both sides and at the foot,[1 · Oct 29, 2026] with the headboard against a wall. They leave out nightstands and dressers.
Clearances to plan for
- Walkways: about 24 in around each side of the bed,[2 · Oct 29, 2026] and between the bed and other furniture or walls.[3 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Frame and headboard: a frame adds up to 5 in in each direction;[1 · Oct 29, 2026] a headboard adds 2 to 4 in to the length.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Nightstands: two 20 in nightstands beside a 60 in queen need 100 in (8′ 4″) of open wall.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Swinging doors: check how far the bedroom door and closet doors swing into the room and whether they clear the bed's corners.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Storage beds: drawers need another 18 to 24 in of open floor beside the frame.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Queen or king for your room?
A king is 16 in wider than a queen; both are 80 in long.[3 · Oct 29, 2026] One maker says a queen fits a 10′ × 10′ room and is comfortable in 10′ × 12′, while a king wants about 12′ × 12′.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Pushing a bed into a corner saves floor space, but then someone has to climb over to get out.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Check your room in 3 steps
- Measure the wall the headboard will go against, and the distance from that wall to the opposite wall.
- Mark the bed's footprint on the floor with painter's tape, adding the frame. Then walk around it, open the doors and pull out the dresser drawers.
- Run the numbers in our size finder. It checks every standard size against your room.
